Playschool and Kindergarten
At GEMS International School, Anantnag, we provide a homely, safe and fun-filled environment that will help your child develop their social, emotional, motor and cognitive skills.
The Playway curriculum offers a programme of child-centred activity-based learning. While encouraging students' natural curiosity and confidence, we focus on the development of behaviours that will enable them to become active and focused learners in a classroom setting. A balance of outdoor and indoor activities ensures there is an emphasis on fun and enrichment. Each child's progress is closely-monitored.
The following formal areas of learning are covered:
Phonetics, reading and language skills
The five senses
Development of curiosity and thinking skills
Health and nutrition
Music and drama
Drawing, crafts and sculpture
Primary School (grades I to V)
At primary school level, we emphasize the development of oral and written expression, creative writing, critical thinking and mathematical skills. The introduction of the second language in the first two years (grades I and II) is an important aspect of this level. We focus on teaching mathematics and environmental studies using practical methods and continue to encourage students to observe and discover. The children begin using computers as a tool for learning and communication during this stage.
In the Upper Primary (grades III to V) children begin to use their acquired skills in language and mathematics to take the initiative in learning. At the same time, there is a gradual broadening of the curriculum. Students’ progress is monitored through regular assessment.
Secondary School (grades IX and X)
At secondary school level, we help students to optimise their potential and stay focused on their goals as they further their knowledge, skills and abilities. Students are able to identify their aptitudes and develop social skills that will help them grow into confident and responsible citizens who set their goals high in order to meet the challenges of a changing world.
A strong and comprehensive educational foundation equips students with the knowledge, skills and understanding to continue their education through different combinations of subjects:
Hindi, Sanskrit or French
Visual and performing arts
Senior Secondary School (grades XI and XII)
Students at this stage are offered three streams - Science, Commerce and Humanities:
Biology/computer science/physical education/sociology
Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation as proposed by CBSE
As part of the CBSE CCE (continuous comprehensive evaluation) policy, Formative Assessment is used to monitor student progress in a non-threatening, supportive environment. Regular descriptive feedback gives students the opportunity to reflect on their performance, take advice and improve upon it. Students are an essential part of the assessment process and help to design criteria and assess their own work as well as that of their peers. If used effectively, CCE can improve student performance, raise self-esteem and reduce teaching workloads.
Formative Assessment (FA) can take place via pen and paper tests, assignments, journals, quizzes, projects, etc. Assignments are designed according to the scope of specific units.
Summative Assessment (SA) relates to assessments carried out at the end of a course of instruction to measure how much a student has learned.
FA and SA reduce anxiety and stress which often builds up if the students are assessed only once through 'one-shot' assessments at the end of year. Timely diagnosis of learning gaps and remedial intervention are beneficial to learning.
